What Is the Best Free Online Translator for English, Russian and Ukrainian?
A free online translator is indispensable when in comes to translating a text or a webpage quickly in order to get the general gist of it. I know one free online translation service developed by local software developers that produces automatic translation output of acceptable quality for English, Ukrainian and Russian languages. It is Pragma.
Pragma has been developed by Trident Software, a Ukrainian-based company. According to the Pragma website’s information, this free online translator translates very short texts with up to 500 characters. However, I have been able to paste and translate 900+ characters with spaces.
Languages supported by Pragma: English, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Latvian, German, French, and Kazakh. The best results are achieved in translations into/from Ukrainian and Latvian.
PROMT gives good results for translations into/from Russian. It offers the following free online automatic translation services:
- Text translator: translates short texts with up to 3,000 characters including spaces (10,000 characters including spaces for registered users)
- Website translator: translates websites, including hyperlinks and captions to pictures
- Dictionary references: upon completion of automatic translation, you can get additional information about any word or word-combination in the source text by clicking the "Dictionary" button
- Mobile translator: enables to translate texts, messages or single words on mobile phones with WAP support, smartphones and pocket PCs.
Languages supported by PROMT: Russian, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese.
There are competitors that outperform the abovementioned free automatic translators when it comes to the quality of translations in English-Russian and English-Ukrainian language pairs. It is my opinion, as a professional translator and a native speaker of Russian and Ukrainian, that Google Translate, Bing Translator, and Babel Fish are definitely better that Pragma and PROMT. Again, in my opinion, Google Translate is No.1 in English to Russian and English to Ukrainian automatic translation.
Google Translate makes it possible to translate short texts, files (PDF, TXT, DOC, PPT, XLS or RTF) and webpages in 50+ languages. Furthermore, with Google Translate, you can search websites in foreign languages and add an automatic website translator to your own webpage.
